FAQ: Can the Monarch Total RNA Miniprep Kit (NEB #T2010) be used to purify RNA from plasma or serum?

Yes. We recommend stabilizing 200 µl to 1 mL plasma or serum by mixing with an equal volume of 2X Monarch DNA/RNA Protection Reagent (NEB #T2011) and following the Mammalian Whole Blood Protocol. It is important to note that RNA yields from plasma and serum are typically low, ranging from 1-100 ng/ml. Purified RNA can be quickly and easily concentrated using the Monarch RNA Cleanup Kit (10 µg) (NEB #T2030).
