New England Biolabs, Inc. Achieves LEED® Green Building Certification

October 2007, (Ipswich, MA) – New England Biolabs, Inc. (NEB) has been awarded LEED Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED is the USGBC’s leading rating system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings.

“One of the founding principles of NEB is a commitment to promoting sound ecological practices and environmental sustainability,” said Jim Ellard, CEO of NEB. “It was our priority to design a state-of-the-art production facility that had minimal impact on the surroundings and the community.”

“NEB is to be commended for achieving LEED certification. This facility is one that both the community and its customers can be proud of,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO, Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “NEB will be a showcase for high-performance, energy-efficient, healthy work environment, and an inspiration for others.”

The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System is a feature–oriented rating system that awards building points for satisfying specified green building criteria. The six major environmental categories of review include: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation and Design. Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels of LEED green building certification are awarded based on the total number of points earned within each LEED category.

LEED certification of NEB was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These features include designing the building to optimize energy usage, usage of energy star compliant building materials, reduced water use and land conservation. Most prominent in our efforts is a state-of-the-art Solar Aquatics System, which treats the campus’ wastewater making it clean enough for reuse or ground water recharge.
