NEB Kids’ Science Day Experiments

Here are some simple experiments that you can perform with your elementary aged students. Each experiment contains a detailed protocol, explanation of the experiment and a video. Please visit Promoting Science Education for more educational resources available from NEB.

DNA extraction

Students will use strawberries to extract DNA.

      

Making molecules

Students will learn about the molecular structure of water.

      

Density, volume & mass

Students will learn about measurements and the properties of density, mass and volume, as well as where each can be applied and implemented.

      

Forensic lab

Find out who stole the piece of cake by using ink and the crumbs left behind to match the suspect to the crime.

      

Elephant toothpaste

This is a demonstration showing that chemical reactions can occur faster when a catalyst is added.


      

Microscope world

Explore the diversity of organisms found in pond water using microscopes and magnifying glasses.

      

Tie dye milk experiment

Students will learn about surface tension using a tie dye milk experiment.


      

Which foods do yeast like best?

Investigate whether an artificial sweetener or sugar will allow yeast to produce carbon dioxide more effectively.

      

Fun with acids & base

Students will use red cabbage juice as a pH indicator to classify substances as acids or bases and will also use vinegar to dissolve baking soda as an example of neutralization.
