Promoting Science Education

"Simply put, BioTeach's ability to offer affordable, robust molecular biology labs to teachers and students would diminish significantly without NEB’s generous support,”
- Whitney Hagins, BioTeach Mentor and Program Coordinator.
Science Experiments for Children
NEB hosts "NEB Kids' Science Day" for local elementary students. We have compiled a selection of the experiments with detailed videos and protocols so you can re-create them with your students.
New Student Starter Pack
The New Student Starter Pack is available to new graduate students and first-year post doctoral students, and contains valuable technical reference materials, supplies for the lab and much more.
Reagent donations
NEB offers a list of our most popular products for free to support teaching labs in the US. We continue to donate NEB products to many high schools, colleges and teaching programs. Please visit our Course Support & Reagent Donation page for more information.
LabCentral Learning Lab
NEB is the primary sponsor of the LabCentral Learning Lab, a community-oriented STEM facility. The goal of the LabCentral Learning Lab is to work with academic and community partners to create a new kind of educational experience near the heart of innovation in Kendall Square. This lab will serve as a community hub, forging lasting connections, and inspiring tomorrow’s innovators. At scale, programming will advance thousands of students and teachers into the future of science.
The facility is also the new home of BioBuilder, a STEM education program that capitalizes on the excitement found through experiential learning in the area of synthetic biology. The BioBuilder curriculum is taught in almost every state in the U.S. and in more than 30 countries around the world.
Molecular Biology Summer Workshop
This two-week long course held at Smith College in Northampton, MA, covers in-depth DNA cloning, gene expression analysis, DNA sequencing (including NextGen and RNA-seq), genomics, bioinformatics, CRISPR/Cas9, RNA interference, PCR and quantitative PCR, protein expression systems and proteomics. Learn hands-on techniques used in gene expression analysis including microarray analysis, RNAi and quantitative RT-PCR, bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics.
Teaching protocols available from Mass BioTeach
NEB provides many of the reagents needed to teach molecular biology techniques through labs designed by BioTeach, a life sciences education program offered through the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation. Teaching resources for biotechnology and molecular biology labs available through the BioTeach program from MassBioEd are available here. To order reagents for these protocols, please use this form.
High school/undergraduate competitions
NEB supplies reagents, free of charge, to participants in both iGEM and BioBuilder®. Teams must already be registered before requesting reagents from NEB.
Genes in Space®
Genes in Space Competition is a national competition in which students from grades 7 through 12 are asked to design experiments that help to address challenges faced during space travel. In 2016, as a part of this program, the first successful PCR experiment was conducted in space using NEB reagents. NEB is a major sponsor of this annual program.
NEB corporate grants
NEB offers grants to local programs bi-annually, which include educational initiatives. Past grants have included funding science laboratories for the Barnard School (South Hampton, NH), funding an outdoor classroom for the Bagnall School (Groveland, MA) and helping to fund the Girls Incorporated of Lynn, which promotes pursuit of academic studies and STEM careers for girls. Application deadlines are April 1 and November 1 of each year. To apply, complete the application form. For more information, contact corpdonations@neb.com.
Educational kits
NEB has partnered with miniPCR™ to offer pre-assembled educational kits.
NEB Ipswich High School Scholarship
Every year, NEB offers a substantial scholarship to a deserving Ipswich High School senior who will pursue a degree in the life sciences. Please contact the Ipswich High School Guidance Department for more information.
