Monitoring Bird Migration With Bioacoustics

New England Biolabs has deployed an autonomous recording unit on the Ipswich campus to monitor bird species during migration months.

In 2024, NEB deployed an Autonomous Recording Unit (ARU) on our Ipswich Campus that records throughout the day during the months of April-June, which coincides with bird migration. I then use an open-source algorithm to analyze the recordings to detect bird species by their unique calls and songs. Bioacoustic monitoring allows us to observe the diversity, fragility and beauty of the natural world, and is another way that we can help to preserve biodiversity.
