Celebrating 40 Years of River Racing and Conservation

New England Biolabs employees have been participating in the Run of the Charles Canoe Race for over 35 years.

Script

Since 1983 the Run of the Charles canoe race has been drawing people out to experience the River in their own backyards all the way to downtown Boston, where they come to appreciate this beautiful essential resource and then help protect it.

We've had hundreds and hundreds of Biolabs employees, generations really, join this team-building relay race and share the annual ...adventures.  I have a few memories myself, after 35 years of running these ten person teams, but one in particular stands out.  For about ten years my racing partner on the last leg, the hardest leg, was a guy named Jim who eventually became our CEO but not before we went through the Watertown rapids, lost our balance and sank.  We did get right in again and crossed the finish line where we noticed in the river health report that the place where we'd just gone for a swim was marked in black as Definitely Not Swimmable.

That was in the early 90's and the river is so much healthier now after years of work by the Watershed and the whole community here.
