Frequently Asked Questions

Can you provide more details about the exterior wall and allowable methods for attaching art to it?

The substrate for the wall art is pre-patinated copper panels. The typical panel size is 7'-0" wide x 2-'5" high with a 3/4" x 1" deep reveal joint at all panel to panel joints. These panels are actually fabricated from copper clad composite panels manufactured by Alpolic, Mitsubishi Chemical America. Each panel generally consists of two layers of .020 inch copper laminated to a 4mm thick polyethylene core. The final copper patina finish is applied by a local subcontractor. It is possible to fasten directly to the panel for very light loads. More than likely the fastening should be coordinated to fasten to the panel edge reinforcement clips or directly to the backup framing system.

Recommendations for attachment of artwork include three approaches:

A. Artwork attached directly to the copper panels. Max allowable uniformly distributed "artwork" load is 5.8 psf.

B. Remove the existing copper panel system, leaving the Z-clips and insulation (Styrofoam Cavitymate by Dow Chemical) in place and attaching the artwork to the Z-clips. Max allowable "artwork" load is 9.8 psf.

C. Remove the existing copper panels, insulation and Z-clips and attach the artwork directly to the metal stud wall framing system. The connection to the stud framing should be to each stud at 24" on center vertically. The wall needs to be reinsulated from in the stud cavity with a vapor barrier introduced on the interior side of the insulation. Max allowable "artwork" load is 105 psf.

How much weight can the curtain wall mulllions support and what is their composition?

The curtain wall mullions are all 2.5 inches wide. The exterior finished
face of the mullion is 1 inch in front of the exterior glass surface. The finish of the curtain wall mullions at the Winter Garden and the Street is clear anodized aluminum. All the vision glass is Viracon VE-2M #2, 1" low-E insulated glass. The Spandrel glass is Viracov V175 high-opac. White. The curtain wall is supported by a tubular steel framing system.

Presently the two 7' x 7'-3" glazed openings are glazed with 1" thick insulating glass. The insulating glass consists of 2 layers of 1/4" glass separated by a 1/2" air space. If the "art glass" is to replace the existing insulated unit it should be designed to be glazed into the existing system. If the "art glass" is designed to be independent it would be supported from the steel tube framing system that backs up the aluminum curtain wall system.

From discussions between the architect, engineer, and the manufacturer of the curtain wall system, the determination is that if the art glass can be glazed into the existing openings it can support 700 pounds per opening. With a few extra fittings added, it should be able to support almost double that figure. That portion of the structure will not be finished until after the competition is closed, so there is time for additional modification if needed.

See detail drawing 1 below for a cross section through the curtain wall mullion .

Can the glass art be free-standing or hung from the cross-beams over the interior street?

The glass artwork here is not intended for the interior lobby and we do not want forms suspended from the I-beam transoms over the interior street. The glass artwork is really intended to replace the two windows. Ideally, the edges of the artwork should be able to be glazed into the existing mullions. However, other means of attachment are possible, as outlined above. If you have a specific variation in mind and would like to run it by the architect and/or owner, let us know and we'll examine the possibility.

Can a single 7' x 14' glass sculpture be proposed instead of two smaller works?

From the standpoint of structural simplicity and ease of installation, two glass artworks (one for each window frame) are desireable. However, it is possible, with some effort, to remove the horizontal mullion separating the two windows to create a space that encompasses both windows.

Does the artwork for the exterior wall have to be exactly 7' wide by 21' high?

The area shown in the images is only a suggested configuration. While the total area covered should remain at approximately 150 sq ft or less if possible, the artist is free to choose any other spatial shapes and orientations for their proposed artwork.

Do you want resumes and slides?

We welcome resumes and statements of past experience in addition to any statements that the artist wishes to make about the design they have proposed. However, the initial presentation to the judges will not include resumes, as the first round of selections will be based on anonymous presentations. Once the field is narrowed, the ability of each artist to undertake and complete the design they have proposed will be evaluated. At this second stage, names, resumes and past experience will be attached to the designs. If an artist does not initially include a resume but is subsequently selected for the second stage, we will contact the artist to obtain any needed information. Slides are not needed in the initial stage and thus we do not request them. At the second stage, artists may elect to send slides if they are unable to provide images in another format.

I want to precisely match the color of the patina on the copper panels. Are any high quality pictures available?

At present, no pictures that precisely satisfy this request exist. We may soon have a few better pictures and that information will be posted on this web site. In addition, anyone who has requested the images will be contacted. However, artists should keep in mind that precise color matching is not necessary for this stage of the competition. The judges will be made aware of the inherent difficulties in obtaining precise color swatches or images. The finish is applied by a local contractor, not the panel manufacturer, and the finish may vary slightly from panel to panel. In addition, the patina is a "living finish" that will itself change colors over time. Thus an exact color match is virtually impossible.

Does my entry have to be on letter size paper?

No. Any size entry will be accepted. However, keep in mind that if you submit your entry electronically, we do not have a large-format color laser printer available. All electronic entries will be printed on a high quality color laser printer using US Letter size paper.
